The Issue

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer plans to formally announce his retirement as early as tomorrow, January 27, 2022, after serving for more than two decades on the high court, according to a source familiar with the matter.

His retirement paves the way for President Biden to appoint a new Supreme Court justice. His pick must be confirmed by the Senate.

The White House said Biden stands by his commitment to nominate a Black woman to the high court, which would be an historic first. Who better than to fill this seat than Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama.

She is the first African-American First Lady of the United States, a lawyer and writer

who,  "through her four main initiatives, became:

A role model for women

An advocate for:

healthy families

service members and their families

higher education

international adolescent girls education.

Michelle earned a:

bachelor’s degree from Princeton University

a juris doctor degree from Harvard Law School.

In 1988, she returned to Chicago to join the firm of Sidley Austin. It was there that she met future President Barack Obama, a summer associate she was assigned to advise.

Michelle Obama told the Democratic National Convention in 2008:

“Each of us also comes here tonight by way of our own improbable journey” and “driven by a simple belief that . . . we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be.”
