Make a Mediterranean designation instead of Caucasian.

The Issue

All of the Mediterranean countries

The Mediterranean countries are Albania, Algeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Monaco, Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain, Syria, Turkey and Tunisia.

Treatment of Italians

Italians were considered not quite white in the United States and were subjected to the Jim Crow laws of segregation. They weren't allowed to marry whites of Northern European ancestry in the South and Midwest. Over 80% of Italian immigrants were from Southern Italy.

Mass lynchings happened to Italians often. One of the biggest mass lynchings happened to Italians in New Orleans in 1890, when they thought that an Italian killed a white police chief named David Hennessy. The police chief was of Irish (Caucasian) descent.

Italian-Americans were the third most discriminated against ethnic group in the United States. The first were African-Americans and the second were Natives. Italian-Americans suffered a lot of discrimination and some changed their names because of it. Many Italian-Americans dropped the language and Catholicism in order to get jobs.

Banks wouldn't even accept their money, not even on the West Coast. That's why an Italian-American named Amadeo Giannini started Bank of Italy, which is now Bank of America.

There were more Italian-Americans that fought in World War II than any other ethnic group. We were given the white label sometime after the war.

How most people of Italian descent feel

Most people of Italian descent and other descendants of the Mediterranean don't consider themselves white. We feel there should be a box for Mediterraneans when filling out forms.

It's time they give Italian-Americans and other cultures of similar ancestry a chance to mark Mediteranean on legal papers.
