On July 14th, 2020, President Donald Trump ordered by executive action that the U.S. Department of State take steps to terminate the Fulbright exchange program in China and Hong Kong.

First established in 1946, the Fulbright program was designed to build bridges between peoples and nations by fostering networks of mutual understanding between citizens of the United States of America and countries around the world. At a time when carrying out American initiatives that cross borders has become increasingly difficult, the unique opportunities created by the Fulbright program are more important than ever. It is because of the state of U.S.- China relations today that Fulbright’s work is more needed, not less.

Our government’s investments in the Fulbright program directly benefit American citizens through disproportionate returns in contributions to the fields of U.S. public service and academia. Terminating the Fulbright program risks irreversibly setting back progress in the fields of science, culture, and education that has often been made possible only through Fulbright’s unique capabilities and mission. Moreover, the termination sets a dangerous precedent for academic institutions, international organizations, and businesses who have long relied on the U.S.-China relationship.

As members and alumni of the Fulbright program, we feel it is our duty to bring to attention the drastic implications that this suspension will incur, and to wholeheartedly advocate against the termination of the Fulbright program in China and Hong Kong.

We ask you to join us in collectively objecting to President Trump’s Executive Order by vocalizing your opposition in the following ways:

  1. Write to your local Representative, Senator, and the 12-person Fulbright Board (their contact information here). Use the email template linked here.
  2. Sign our petition here on Change.org! Write your organization affiliation and your Fulbright year in your reasons for signing, if applicable.
  3. Spread this collective statement through social media with the hashtag #ProtectFulbright and use #MyFulbrightStory to share your Fulbright experiences.
  4. If you have a personal narrative related to the Fulbright program in China or Hong Kong, please reach out to us! We would love to elevate your story and provide a platform for engagement. Fill out our story submission form. Anonymous submissions are welcomed.

Vocalize, Distribute, and Act.

Signed,

Members and Alumni of the Fulbright Community
