Kabila must step down on December 19, 2016 - Kabila doit démissionner le 19 décembre 2016

The Issue

The Democratic Republic of Congo is at a critical juncture in its history. President Joseph Kabila, whose term ends this year, has raised fears that he will attempt to stay in power past the constitutional limit of two terms and the country risks violence, instability, and repression on a widespread scale. The United States of America as a beacon of freedom and democracy together with the international community should pressure Kabila and his administration to step down.

The foundation of U.S. policy toward Africa.

1) Strengthening Democratic Institutions;

2) Supporting African economic growth and development;

3) Advancing Peace and Security;

4) Promoting Opportunity and Development.

Kabila and his administration have failed tremendously in advancing the U.S. policy in the Congo and the Central Africa region. The growing coalition of voices calling for credible, timely elections, and a peaceful transition of power. On December 19, 2016 if Kabila refuses to listen, the U.S and allies should push him out to set a path toward stronger democratic governance, the rule of law, and respect for human rights, marking a significant precedent for Congo and the entire region.
