Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease 2 is spreading at an alarming pace through North America and is preventable because vaccines exist in Europe. The aim of this petition is to raise awareness with the Federal government that there is a 2nd pandemic happening to our rabbits and it is virtually impossible to import vaccines. RHD2 is similar to ebola in humans and is a horrific way for rabbits to die. The disease was brought to North America from Europe and can be protected against by the vaccines already being produced in France and Spain. In addition this petition aims to ask the Federal government for research funding for a better vaccine. This is a time of unprecedented research and cooperation in the development of human vaccines and we should use this momentum to develop an RHD2 vaccine that does not rely on live rabbits to incubate the virus. The 2 in production rely on the livers of live rabbits, which is a cruel and torturous way to save other rabbits. The United States should also work together with Mexico and Canada to produce our own vaccine so we don't have to rely on the EU to vaccinate our rabbits.
