Why this petition matters

Started by Joshua Jaajaa

In 2017 the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017 was signed into law. The new "Forever GI Bill" marks a significant expansion of veterans' education benefits.

There’s no longer an expiration date.

Previously, veterans had to use their Post-9/11 GI Bill within 15 years of their last 90-day period of active-duty service. That requirement is going away.
This portion of the law will apply to anyone who left the military after January 1, 2013. It will also apply to spouses who are receiving education benefits through the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship for family members of service members who have been killed in the line of duty since Sept. 10, 2001.

However veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, who discharged from service prior to 2013 don’t qualify and their benefits will soon expire.

Given the pandemic, the housing shortage, and financial hardship over the past year millions of veterans and their ability to utilize the Post 9/11 GI Bill has been impacted.

We believe all veterans who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan war campaigns should be covered under the Forever GI Bill and their time to use the benefit should not expire.
