As the owner of an American Staffordshire Terrier, I am tired of the unjust discrimination and negative stereotyping of bully breeds and other "aggressive breed" dogs. My petition is to ask President Obama to ban Breed Specific Legislation in our nation. Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) is a law that bans or restricts certain types of dogs based on their appearance, usually because they are stereotyped as “dangerous” breeds. BSL allows state and local governments to place restrictions on what kind of breeds citizens may own, for example regulated breeds typically comprise the “pit bull” class of dogs, including American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and English Bull Terriers. Additionally, American Bulldogs, Rottweilers, Mastiffs, Dalmatians, Chow Chows, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers or any mix of these breeds may be included in BSL. Furthermore, BSL makes it difficult for owners of these breeds to find housing, because property managers are allowed to ban these dogs from living in their buildings.
