On January 20, 2015, during his State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama became the first US President to not only mention transgender people in his address, but to include them with other at risk segments of the American people. His words, "Condemn the persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. "We do these things not only because they're right, but because they make us safer."
Frankly, this is a big deal. Not just the use of the words themselves, but the recognition of trans people, bisexuals, gays and lesbians as people who deserve to be treated like all other people.
And it shows in the overwhelming response to this petition. Your voices, all 328,000 plus of them will be heard. The organizations behind this will be coming together, first to present this petition and then, in coming weeks and months, prepare for the work of making Leelah's request come into being.
While our focus on Leelah's Law came about from the desperate plea of one young trans woman's to "Fix Society," we have always understood that our petition reaches deeper than just the trans community. Conversion Therapy affects not just trans people, but gays, lesbians, bisexuals and members of other gender, sexual, and romantic minorities; anyone who doesn't conform to others ideas of expression or identity. We extend our thanks to all who have stepped forward, our friends, our families, our allies. Thank you for joining us in saying "No more. Not one more. We want an end to coercive conversion treatments."
To our President, Mr. Obama, thank you sir. Thank you for paying attention. Please join us on the journey.
