I can't sleep tonight. I keep thinking of Leelah's last minutes ten days ago walking along Interstate 71 feeling hopeless in the cold alone. I can't sleep because there are thousands of youth who are feeling the same hopelessness. Feeling alone and desperate. We've received hundreds of stories from LGBTQ youth. Those who are terrified of their parents finding out they are transgender, or gay or lesbian or bisexual. Terrified that once their secret is out, they will face punishment for being the person they are. Worried about being taken to the counselors that will tell them they have to 'convert'. I know your receive countless emails each day hearing the suffering that is taking place to so many. I know we become numb to the constant barrage of death, mayhem and destruction. Even now, last weeks headlines and concerns have been replaced by this weeks headlines and last week fades from our consciousness. But let us not let Leelah fade from our awareness and thoughts to become just another story you read about and soon forget. I want to ask you to do something for 30 seconds at this moment. I ask you to close your eyes, imagine yourself walking down a dark highway, cold, lonely, hopeless and imagine what Leelah might have felt like. I ask you to take 30 seconds to consider what other youth are feeling in their rooms tonight, what thoughts they went to sleep with and wondering what to do with a problem that seems insurmountable. Transgender youth have a 42% chance of making a suicide attempt. That is 4 out of every 10 transgender youth. Conversion therapy contributes to that risk substantially. Together, we can tell the youth that tomorrow does get better and that very soon, Leelah's Law can get passed to protect them. But to do that, we have to not let Leelah fade from our memory and pass out of our willingness to stand up for her. So what can you do? Comment on this petition by sharing it on your social media. Share the petition. Tell all your friends what happened to Leelah. Tell your family about Leelah and educate them about Leelah's Law. Build the multiple voices into one loud voice telling every person you know- "We have to 'Fix Society'" Allison Woolbert leelahslaw.com
