Commutation of Sentence for Shawn V. Brown

The Issue

1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I talk like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.

My husband Shawn Brown has been incarcerated since he was 18 years old, and today is his 42nd Birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY). My husband was convicted by plea to 2 counts of 2nd degree murder, Attempted murder and Conspiracy to Commit Open Murder. My husband was sentenced to Life with the possibility of parole. An understandable sentence for most, but not for my husband. My husband Shawn Brown didn't even kill anybody. He did help carry out these unnecessary acts by revealing the location to the victims. He admitted his faults and took full responsibility for his actions. 24 years is long enough for someone who did not, on record, physically kill anybody. Especially when there are people, all the time in Michigan, getting a lessor sentence to a number amount of years for actually pulling the trigger.

My husband has been to the parole board 4 times and has filed 2 commutations. We were denied every time. As of today, my husband has been misconduct free for over 5 years. He has countless certificates. Some of his certificates were even paid for through correspondence courses. He has come a long way with his education from someone who has never seen a highschool classroom. He has never completed a grade between 1st and 8th without getting suspended. Now he has everything that MDOC has to offer lifers, plus some. In addition, he was in the dog program for well over a year until his recent transfer to another facility. In fact he became a dog handler assistant on our wedding day, February 21, 2020. He has all the support he needs to become a productive citizen of society. He has nephews who adore him and looks to him for guidance. Shawn is a good man. He is smart, driven, motivated to be a better person everyday, loving and a great husband.

We are filing another commutation in December of this year. Please sign this petition to help my husband to become #275055 no more. He has yet to experience what it is like to live as a free-adult. He deserves to come home, not only by his family, friends, yours, but also by the MDOC standards. Statistical standards too. He has more than proven to MDOC but also to himself that he is ready.
