Stop river diversion (Yethinahole Project) undergoing at western ghats region.
The Issue
Western ghats are ecological sensitive areas(ESA),and has been identified as one of the eight richest biodiversity hot spots and has received the UNESCO world heritage site tag in 2012.
Yethinahole project , aimed at pumping the water from western ghats(closer to the sea level) to a region which is almost 1700 feet above sea level. Original proposed report says that acquisition of 190 hectares of land ,including 20 hectares of forest land but hasn't mentioned the range of forest , and the range of farmer's fertile land thats going to submerge once after the implementation of eight check dams (a survey says 400 acres of rich agricultural land in sakleshpur is going to submerge). This project has been implemented without conducting an Environment Impact Assessment(EIA) to predict the environment consequences.
Government report also states that, diverting a total of 24TMC of water, but a study by a team of experts from Centre of Ecological Sciences(CES), of the Indian Institute of Science(IISC) bengaluru led by T.V Ramachandran revealed that only 9TMC of water was available at the source. However the authorities concerned have overlooked this study and went ahead with the project.
Effects:
In coastal areas(near to western ghats) there are already instances of man-animal conflicts(Elephants and leopards entering into cities because of the destruction of its habitats) and the region is already started witnessing scarcity of drinking water now a days.
For Reproduction of fishes convergence of river ie sweet water to the saline water is important ,so by the implementation of this project Nethravathi river is going to become dry thereby affecting fishermen families and sea water will start entering into the river course resulting in the salt water accumulation in wells/ponds.
The Government was thinking to implement Kasthuri rangan report and the elephant and tiger corridors to safeguard the forest cover. If at all, this project is executed , the very purpose of above said reports/corridors (Earlier the Government had told that, people may have to relocate from the proposed corridor regions to protect western ghats) will be defeated.
By the name of Yethinahole project, mining, quarrying, sand mining, illegal logging of trees and major costruction works has already started bypassing the crucial environmental clearances.
Conclusion:
Anything can be repaired/reconstructed back but not the rich biodiversity regions like western ghats. Direction of natural flow of water shouldnot be disturbed. If at all we break the rules of nature, definitely Karnataka (Both coastal and North Kannada region) will witness gigantic natural calamities as that happened in Uttarakhand, Nepal and chennai.
With the cost of proposed estimate of the project ie 13,000 crore rupees(It will cross over 20,000 crores by the end of the project) and the 24/7 power required to pump the water from a sea level region ; a better and permanent solution of drinking water for Kolar,Chikaballapur regions can be formulated by desilting/dredging the ponds, lakes and wells , encouraging people (by subsidising) to dig more and more wells and ponds which will act as natural water containers to increase ground water level rather than borewells. Following rain water conservation and harvesting methods, replinishing the empty borewells by feeding the runoff water to it. Planting more and more trees , as deforestation is the main reason behind all these consequences.
A request to the politicians :
Karnataka doesnot fall under natural disaster prone zone, please dont make it to become so. There are already lots of examples , to show that the river diversion will turn detrimental to the ecological balance and to the people living near the original river course. So please lets act smart enough to preserve this remaining bio-diversity site.
