Nikola Tesla has contributed so much to the world due to his unbridled genuis most notably the alternating current which made it possible to transport electricity over longer distances. Tesla also invented the Tesla coil which lay the foundations for wireless technology and is still being used in radio technology today. Tesla and his inventions have literally and figuratively been a guiding light for the rest of humanity to follow. 

This post is meant to shine a light on a dark subject. (pun intended.) 

Many people do not know that 91 of Nikola Tesla's relatives were tortured and slaughtered by the Croatian Ustasha. 

On the day of St. Elijah in 1941, the Ustashas killed all of the Serbian inhabitants of Smiljan, the birthplace of Nikola Tesla. Imagine if Nikola was not in America at this point. He would have surely been tortured and exterminated.

Two of the victims were not even a year old. The oldest victim was 71. 

Nikola Tesla's father Milutin wrote for the newspaper "Srpski Dnevnik" under the pseudonym Rodoljub Pravicic advocating the freedom of Serbs to profess their Orthodox faith in the Austrian Empire. 

Today in Smiljan, what remains is a small cemetery above the church and a tomb with more than 600 men, women and children.
