Nigeria Students are dying, our mental health was neglected. #ourMentalhealthmatters

The Issue

  • It happened last December during my first semester examination at school. The exam was almost over and we had few papers left. I had stayed together with other friends at one of our friend's apartment for the exam period. The second to the last paper I had an issue with a male friend that got me down emotionally much that all efforts to make sure I understood what I was reading proved abortive. I kept bombarding my brain with series of rhetoric questions and discouraging statements to deny my brain of the normal feelings if that would at least help me get out of it, at least for my examination sake and my parent's efforts  and money - "This is a man like you, why should you be bothered?" I told myself. This is your first semester examination and it might probably determine what you would graduate with? Do you wanna break your self promise that no carry over till graduation? But they failed. All just didn't work  that night then I had no choice than to surrender to my brain. I was ready for the worst, carrying over really meant nothing to me t the moment. Then It dawned one then that mentally at the period I couldn't do anything with my brain because the anger, pains and emotional breakd that comes with the issue I had with a male friend for that matter had taken over me finally.

I went for the exam and I did all I could and left the hall sobbing profusely that I didn't talk to all my friends. it was at that moment after the examination that I realised what mental health really means. I realised how most schools have failed not because they aren't competent but because they just didn't pay attention to their Students' mental health. i relased how most students had died before even they started  living their dreams not because they never really wanted to -the life and the dream but because their mental health was neglected. I realised how most of the students in Nigeria had graduated with bad and poor grades not because they are that bad bit because they were just not okay mentally during the whole duration of their study and obviously this would definitely continue if The federal and states  government of Nigeria doesn't pay attention to mental health of students at all levels in our education system.

There should be adequate establishment of a department that ensures students mental health in all levels of Nigeria Education system and revive such departments that exist before in Nigerian schools.

Sensitization and Enlightment programs should be organized to encourage  Students and youth to talk about their mental health often.

with these the Nigerian students would have a better education and an assurance for a better future.
