"The Office of Diversity and Inclusion aims to engage with students, staff, faculty, administrators, alumni, and the surrounding community to co-create and sustain a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming campus. "

This is the statement from Wayne State University's Office of Diversity and Inclusion. As a university that proclaims this statement, proudly boasts that it is the most diverse university in the state of Michigan, and regularly uses BIPOC faces on marketing literature, it is unacceptable that the university has buildings, streets, and stores named after a racist and a bigot. 

General Anthony Wayne condoned slaves. He owed and regularly purchased enslaved peoples to work his two rice fields. He also led devastating battles against Indigenous peoples that led to the pillaging of their land and their culture.

To have his name plastered all over campus is a slap in the face to not only the Wayne State BIPOC students, faculty, and staff, but also to the people within the City of Detroit.

Racism and bigotry have no place in our world or on our campus. We are calling for President M. Roy Wilson and the Board of Governors to immediately remove his name from "Mad Anthony's General Store", Anthony Wayne Drive, and the Anthony Wayne Apartments. These places should then been named after activists and allies that embody social justice, diversity, and inclusion. Anything less than this is unacceptable.
