President Joe Biden, Demand the Immediate Release and Exoneration of Luigi Mangione

The Issue

Rise up for Luigi Mangione, a man who stood against the corruption in the United States health insurance industry. Luigi saw the overwhelming struggles that countless people were facing, victims of a relentless system that puts profit before human lives. In a desperate bid for change, Luigi committed a reprehensible act that left one man dead and our nation in shock. Yet, the public response was outrage, not aimed at Luigi, but at the fundamentally flawed for-profit health insurance industry. America remains the sole democratic country without universal healthcare, a fact that continues to cause extreme hardship for its citizens.

Our healthcare system is in dire need of change. As per a study conducted by the American Journal of Medicine, 66.5% of all bankruptcies in the United States were tied to medical issues, either because of high costs for care or time out of work. Furthermore, a report by the Commonwealth Fund found that 43% of adults with health insurance have difficulty affording their deductibles, and roughly a third couldn't afford to see a doctor when they were sick.

UnitedHealthCare is statistically the one company in the United States with the highest health claim denial rate of 32%, made possible by the deliberate use of artificial intelligence algorithms with a proven failure rate of NINETY PERCENT.  It and other health insurance companies have made use of who are termed "denial nurses" whose sole function is to find ways to deny insurance claims while patients are being treated.  In some cases, patients with terminal illnesses have had their claims not denied, but delayed repeatedly, only to be approved after the moment of their passing.  These and other, far more reprehensible policies that have afflicted many thousands, far more than the single life of one wealthy executive, must be put to an immediate and definitive end.  How sorrowful it is that it took one man taking another man's life to lay bare this corruption, this rot.

Let's make our collective voice loudly heard and pressure the courts to release and exonerate Luigi Mangione. His actions, while admittedly extreme, epitomize the level of desperation and powerlessness felt by so many. We must demand justice for Luigi, but more importantly, we need to advocate for a radical overhaul of our broken healthcare industry. For Luigi, for the victims of a criminal healthcare system, and for the future of health in America, sign this petition now.
