On the weekend of 1 May, Phelokazi Mqathana, a 24-year-old lesbian and a promising young chef, was stabbed to death in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. It was reported that a man, who has since been arrested, stabbed her after she rejected his advances. Phelokazi’s murder is the eighth known LGBTIQ+ killing in a period of less than three months.
