Hello Supporters and Allies,
We hope you are graciously well in these times - we send the best wishes to you and your loved ones. The name has not been changed - although we are still fighting and are continuing the conversation.
In this update, it’s NEEDED that we touch base with you on an action item we hope you take part in. Marie and I as mentioned before have collaborated with the SFSS Council, SAAC and SOCA to write an **official open letter** to Andrew Petter, Joy Johnson, Ramana Khan Hamami and Theresa Hanson regarding their name change. (Seen in this link - https://forms.gle/oYNY8xHxHG2uuLb66
If you haven't done so already, please read, sign, and share the document. It’s *extremely* Important and will give us the ability to stay united and initiate more pressure onto Andrew Petter - the decision-maker of the athletic team name change. We are hoping to officially send the letter out by the end of the week and are in need of support!
This is a call because of President Petter's latest comments in the recent senate meeting. Senate Erika Plettner asked, “what efforts have been initiated and what the approximate timeline of such a change would be.” Petter responded was completely lacking the focus point on Black and POC experience of trauma. He responded by saying “it is unfortunate that the term “clan” was appropriated by a racist organization in [the US] and that that has created some real difficulties for our athletes [...] but to change the name because of a racist organization could be seen as succumbing to the hegemony of a racist organization, so it’s been a complex issue.” Black and POC trauma and endangerment are not a complex issue and hegemony is already applicable by using a name like this. You can read further on the senate meeting down below from The PEAK’s latest issue. Sign the open letter and stay united.
Blessings,
Othniel & Marie
