Hi Everyone,

Here to touch base with you once again! I’d like to thank you for all the support, solidarity and dedication to this movement. Since the last update, several SFU organizations have graciously stepped up in solidarity to make this change possible at SFU. Furthermore, this update is all about what you, as supporters, can do next! You’ve already helped us so much in simply supporting and I’d appreciate it if you could help us take further action!

Down below are two things we need you to do to help us further this movement; 

1. Sign the SFSS Council’s Open Letter in order to show solidarity (ASAP)
 

I and Marie have collaborated with the SFSS Council, SAAC and SOCA on an open letter. This open letter entails the matters regarding the name change and an urgent call to action by the administration at SFU. As we wait to hear the recommendation and actions SFU will reveal in August, we constructed this letter to show collective unity amongst school organizations, groups, students, and society as we all stand with the action to immediately drop the name “Clan” from SFU’s affiliation. We encourage you to please read, sign, and share the google form to those around you on your social media accounts, emails, and messages. As well, please add the hashtag “#IAMNOTYOURCLANSMAN” to your posts!

2. Full out the SFU Athletics Survey due by July 14th, 2020 at 5:00 PM (PST).
 

SFU Athletics is of course in their review process right now. What this entails is that they want to hear your own concerns regarding the team name. They have invited you to provide your feedback by submitting an online survey. The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete and is due by July 14th, 2020 at 5:00 PM (PST).

We HIGHLY recommend you take part in the survey and send it around to your community members in order for there to be a high amount of support stated in their reports. (Plus I haven’t personally seen this survey being advertised much anywhere except on their page and Twitter, so spread it if you can and that would be extremely helpful). Please post the survey on your social media(s) - encourage your community members to fill it out in order to support and have your voices heard.

Finally - If you’ve come this far, I thank you so much. The point of the process is for all of us to be committed to our communities and the people within it. It is essential that we keep amplifying Black and POC voices while applying pressure until the change is confirmed and made. Furthermore, for change to occur, it is mandatory that we adopt allyship and heavily advocate for our communities and you have done so by actively supporting - but keep pushing. I know this movement will collectively be the little print of change we’ve made in our careers at SFU and you have been a part of it.
