Tell the U.S. Forest Service to Support the Lolo-Bitterroot Partnership citizen plan to protect millions of acres of America’s Wild Public Lands

The Flathead, Lolo and Bitterroot National Forests are the heart of the U.S. Northern Rockies, comprising millions of acres of wildlands that belong to all American citizens. According to the Lolo National Forest, “Large, wild areas and a full suite of native species on the forest are nationally important and even merit global importance. The Lolo National Forest is situated within some of the wildest areas in the United States.”

The Lolo and Bitterroot National Forests contain vital habitat for a unique array of rare and endangered fish and wildlife species including the grizzly bear, wolf, lynx, wolverine, bull trout and cutthroat trout.  The forests also provide connective corridors for animals to move back and forth throughout the region, which is essential to preserving genetic diversity for threatened and endangered species. These forests hold major headwater tributaries to the Columbia River, including the Bitterroot, Clark Fork and Flathead Rivers.  Protecting these forests is also vital to fighting the effects of climate change

The Lolo and Bitterroot Forests are embarking on required revisions to their forest management plans. Since these plans are in effect for decades, protecting forests depends on citizen participation in the planning process.  The logging and mining industries, motorized recreation groups and other advocates for “multiple use” will make sure that they have a place at the table, but the fish, wildlife, and the forests themselves won’t be heard without your help.

The Flathead-Lolo-Bitterroot Citizen Task Force together with Friends of the Bitterroot have drafted a plan for the two forests that advocates the protection of those resources that cannot speak for themselves. We created this petition to demonstrate broad national public support for the elements included in the Lolo-Bitterroot Partnership Plan and to urge inclusion of the Plan as one of the alternatives considered and analyzed for the revised forest plans. Public lands belong to all of us, not just those with special designs on the resources.

Please Sign Our Petition. Add your signature to show your support for protecting America’s Public Lands and the Threatened and Endangered Species who depend on them for their continued survival.
