Preserve the Vital Wildlife Corridor in Area 12-651 on Quadra Island

Preserve the Vital Wildlife Corridor in Area 12-651 on Quadra Island
The Issue
Many years ago when I first moved to my grandmother's traditional territory, I lived in a home just south of Luoma Lake, Granite Bay. I roamed this land and found the most incredible region east of Luoma Lake, where I was introduced to an ancient bog and the pristine Two Mile Lake. I would trek this area, taking in its breathtaking beauty, appreciating its stillness and admiring its tranquility. It was here, at this time of year, that I saw my first and only wolf tracks, four wolves, in the snow.
I am a proud We Wai Kai Member writing this with an urgent plea to protect this significant piece of forest on Quadra Island, which supports a remarkable wildlife corridor. This unique geographical tract harbors a rich wetland ecosystem that is home to diverse flora & fauna. Logging in area 12-651 would not only endanger the abundant wildlife reliant on this corridor, but could potentially destroy a critical ecosystem, hence altering the balance of Quadra Island's natural biodiversity. This area offers more than just a residence to its wildlife; it serves as a green artery, facilitating essential animal movements between different habitats.
In light of the risks posed by logging and the area's significance, I strongly advocate for its protection and preservation as part of the Quadra-Quinsam Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP). This is a vital step that our antiquity, our future, our Quadra Island need. It is time that we recognize the intrinsic and ecological value of these biologically diverse ecosystems and watersheds, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
