Preserve the MV Queen of New Westminster as a Museum

Preserve the MV Queen of New Westminster as a Museum
The Issue
The Queen of New Westminster holds a special place in my heart, as well as in the heart of countless others who have been fortunate enough to traverse the waters of British Columbia aboard her. This iconic vessel, not only my favorite but a treasure trove of memories and stories, is the last surviving original ship from the fleet of the first 12 built for BC Ferries. Her legacy is unparalleled, as the oldest and longest-serving ferry in BC Ferries' history, and as the last surviving V Class vessel, she embodies both historical and cultural significance for British Columbia.
Yet, despite all this, plans are in motion to scrap her upon her retirement in October 2030. To allow the MV Queen of New Westminster to be dismantled and forgotten would be a tragedy not only for maritime history but for the cultural heritage of British Columbia. We must act now to preserve her as a historical museum dedicated to the rich history of BC Ferries. Such an initiative would provide a tangible link to our past, educating future generations about the pivotal role these ferries have played in connecting communities across the region.
Preserving the MV Queen of New Westminster as a museum offers tangible benefits. It provides space for educational programs, historical displays, and community events, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our maritime heritage. Additionally, the museum could become a unique tourist attraction, drawing visitors, educating them about our local history, and contributing to the local economy.
This ship is more than just a ferry; it's a floating symbol of our shared history and identity. We cannot allow her to be discarded and lost to history. Instead, let's come together to ensure her preservation for future generations to experience and cherish.
Sign this petition to urge BC Ferries and relevant authorities to recognize the historical value of the MV Queen of New Westminster and to take the necessary steps to convert her into a museum. Let's save not only a ship but a piece of British Columbia's storied past.
