Preserve the Mountain Bike Trail at White County Recreational Complex

Preserve the Mountain Bike Trail at White County Recreational Complex
The Issue
I am a recent convert to mountain biking, a hobby that has not only improved my physical health but also my mental well-being. It's an activity that brings joy and fosters community connections among those of us who enjoy it for various reasons. However, our beloved mountain bike trail at the White County Recreational Complex in Sparta, TN is facing challenges.
Recently, clear signs of disruption have been observed on the trail - vegetation clearance, vehicle tracks and paint markings - all indicative of plans for a new archery range. This development poses significant safety risks to mountain bikers and hikers alike. When I expressed my concerns of the safety of the apparent location of the archery range, I received a response more so stating they were unaware the trail existed. I am hopeful the archery range will not interfere with the trail, but in order to raise awareness, I need to make the decision makers aware that the trail is used and enjoyed.
We acknowledge the importance of recreational diversity within the complex, but there are alternative locations where an archery range could be established without jeopardizing existing activities. By exploring these alternatives, we can ensure the safety and enjoyment of all park users.
Moreover, preserving our mountain bike trail isn’t just about safeguarding our hobbies; it’s about protecting a valuable asset that contributes to our local economy and community well-being. According to the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), outdoor recreation generates billions in consumer spending annually and supports millions of jobs nationwide. In Tennessee alone, outdoor recreation generates billions in consumer spending annually, driving tourism and supporting local businesses.
We urge decision-makers at the White County Recreational Complex to reconsider their plans for the archery range location and prioritize the safety and interests of all stakeholders. Let’s work together to find a solution that preserves our mountain bike trail and promotes safe, inclusive recreational spaces for everyone.
