Preserve the Green Space Adjacent to Freedom Trail Park

The Issue

For years, we—local residents of Maple, Vaughan, ON, Canada—have cherished the patch of green next to Freedom Trail Park where Freedom Trail intersects with Grand Trunk Avenue. This integral piece of our local environment, empty and full of green, serves as a reminder to us of the importance of preserving our natural surroundings. However, this could soon change drastically.

Plans have been drafted to transform this area into a housing development, replacing our cherished green space with concrete and brick. The loss would not just be ours, but that of the local wildlife who make their home in these verdant surroundings.

But the story doesn't end here. We have the power to protect this land. Instead of the proposed housing development, we look to city officials, community leaders, and environmental advocates to transform this land into an extension of Freedom Trail Park, creating a larger space for all to enjoy and preserving the natural beauty of our area for future generations.

The importance of green spaces in urban areas is increasingly recognized. They provide numerous benefits, from reducing stress to improving air quality. Moreover, in Ontario, small parks and open spaces have been determined to contribute positively to nearby residential property values (source: University of Guelph).

In light of these compelling reasons, we urge mayor Del Duca and the city of Vaughan to preserve the patch of land adjacent to Freedom Trail Park as a green space. Please make the decision that benefits our community, our environment, and our future. Sign this petition and give voice to keeping Maple green.
