Preserve Southvale PS & Maralinga PS Land for Educational Purposes
The issue
As a resident of the City of Greater Dandenong, VIC, Australia, I am deeply concerned about the future of our community. The lands that once housed Southvale PS and Maralinga PS have been rezoned from educational purposes to housing. This decision not only threatens our limited open space but also jeopardizes the future education opportunities for our children.
In CGD most wards have only 4% open space including the lowest tree canopy coverage in the region. Every block sold is being developed, further shrinking these precious green spaces that serve as the lungs of our area. The Southvale land has been tagged for Inclusional Housing - a move that will mix social/community housing with residential housing without clear disclosure to potential buyers.
Moreover, every year, we are witnessing an increase in population density. Many children now and in the future will potentially live in high-rise apartments and attend childcare or kinder in two-storey facilities devoid of nature play opportunities. Our regional college is already at capacity; where will our growing population be educated in the future?
Once we had 8 educational opportunities within 1 km of one another however since the 1990's , local schools have been amalgamated reducing educational choices. These school sites have been locked away from the community for around 12 years. The trees on site are now well established mature specimens as these two original schools served their communities for around 40 + years and now several of the trees are labelled heritage trees by experts.
With a high multicultural population residing here, education needs are paramount more than ever before. These school sites offer not just open spaces now but also hold potential for future educational opportunities - they have been locked up from community use for at least 12 years now.
We cannot stand by while these invaluable assets are taken away from us under short-sighted policies that prioritize immediate profits over long-term community benefits.
