Preserve Shellharbour's Youth-Built MTB Dirt Jumps

The issue

The MTB dirt jumps in Shellharbour, which were painstakingly created by local children and teenagers, have been destroyed countless times by the Shellharbour Community Council. This recreational spot has not only provided our youth with a healthy outlet, but also taught them teamwork, problem-solving, and engineering skills as they worked together to create these ramps. This essentially makes it not just a play area, but an educational platform as well. If these dirt jumps are demolished, we lose a valuable resource for skills development and physical activity.

According to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 25.6% of Australians aged 5–17 are classified as overweight or obese, and activities like dirt biking can significantly help counteracting this worrying trend (source: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Report, 2016).

We urge the Shellharbour Community Council to prioritize the health, well-being, and recreational needs of our children. By reassessing their decision, they can realign with their stated mission of "supporting our community to lead healthy, active lives" and provide a hopeful message to our youngsters.

Please sign this petition and help the voices of Shellharbour's youth be heard. Let's save their MTB dirt jumps.
