The Issue

I am a third generation survivor of Canada's residential school system. My story, along with many others, holds the echoes of a painful past that should not be forgotten. These stories are not just personal narratives; they are an integral part of the history of Canada. They give voice to the trauma endured by Indigenous communities and serve as a stark reminder of the injustices faced.

The experiences documented by survivors provide invaluable insight into the struggle and resilience of Indigenous people. However, with plans to destroy these accounts by 2027, we stand on the brink of erasing a critical chapter of our collective conscience. It is imperative that we take action to preserve these narratives for future generations, to learn, to understand, and to ensure such atrocities never occur again.

The preservation of these stories is not just about maintaining records; it's about honoring the lives affected by these schools and recognizing the systemic injustices Indigenous communities have faced. Each account represents courage, survival, and a demand for justice.

We can and must find a way to safeguard these testimonies. This could be achieved through digitization, archiving, or partnering with historical societies, universities, and Indigenous communities who are committed to keeping these stories alive. By securing funding and employing preservation experts, we can ensure these vital voices continue to be heard.

Act now by signing this petition to urge relevant authorities to halt the destruction of these historical accounts and instead commit to their preservation. By doing so, we are standing in solidarity with survivors, acknowledging their pain, and ensuring that history remains intact for future generations to reflect upon. The past must be a lesson, not a forgotten chapter. Sign now and make a difference.
