Preserve Racing History: Save South Mountain Speedway
The Issue

Valley of the Sun Quarter Midget Association (VSQMA) is a 501-3C nonprofit oroganization that is member controlled. Our goal is to allow young drivers to enjoy the sport of racing with their families and make memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Throughout the past several months, VSQMA has diligently endeavored to collaborate with the City of Phoenix in pursuit of a contractual agreement to sustain operations at our historic South Mountain Speedway. Our original contract termination cited substantial repairs as the primary issue. Despite the magnitude that the City of Phoenix believes these repairs to be, our club has demonstrated a firm commitment to both funding and executing the necessary work to ensure the track's longevity. Regrettably, the absence of a renewed contract has impeded our ability to proceed.
We have diligently complied with all directives from the City Parks and Recreation Board to obtain a new contract. However, dialogues with city personnel have led us to suspect that the cited repairs may have been utilized as a pretext for the permanent closure of our track. Several city employees have explicitly stated that South Mountain Speedway does not align with the park's long-term plans.
Despite submitting a letter to the Director of Parks and Recreation weeks ago, we have yet to receive a response. This prolonged silence leads us to believe that there is a concerted effort to eliminate the race track altogether.
The closure of South Mountain Speedway will have far-reaching consequences. Many of our club members who are unable to afford regular travel to Tucson will be forced to relinquish their passion for racing altogether. Additionally, the absence of our track essentially eliminates any opportunity for new enthusiasts, particularly children not already affiliated with our club, to discover the exhilarating sport of quarter midget racing unless they have the financial means to travel. This closure not only impacts our current members but also stifles the potential growth and accessibility of the sport within our community.
At this crucial juncture, we appeal to the public for support. We implore community members to demonstrate their solidarity by signing this petition, effectively communicating to the city our collective belief that South Mountain Speedway, a fixture for over 50 years, is an integral part of our park's heritage. Additionally, we urge constituents to engage with their respective council members, advocating for VSQMA to be granted an extended lease to undertake the necessary repairs and ensure the continued operation of the track.
Your support is essential in safeguarding the future of our cherished speedway and preserving its legacy for generations to come.
