Preserve & Protect the Environmental, Natural, & Historical Significance of Severus Hill

The Issue

We believe that Severus Hill should be preserved for future generations to appreciate its natural beauty and historical importance as well as its impact on air quality and biodiversity in our city. A Friends of Severus Hill is anyone who feels a sense of the connection with the hill whether it's environmental, natural or historical significance.

This incredible green wild space has been locked up and left untouched for several decades by current landowner. In that time nature has reclaimed it as its own - forming an island oasis for nature or a 'green lung' right in the heart of York. Home to many species of bird (May-October 2023, 32 varieties spotted), several families of foxes, hedgehogs and many type of butterfly.

Now with the site being put up for sale initially in October 2023, 2024 is a pivotal moment for the hills future and value to be celebrated. Watch the "The Story of Severus Hill...so far" below:

Severus Hill is a sanctuary for wildlife to thrive while also housing calcareous grass which is rare in Northern England. It is not just a hill; it is an integral part of our national history with connections to Roman Emperors and World War II.

As residents of York and wider, who value our environment and shared history to we're petitioning for the preservation of Severus Hill. Let's work together towards protecting this site from being lost forever - ensuring that future generations will benefit from this green natural oasis steeped with rich history. In 2015 the site was give a SINC (Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation) due to the presence of rare calcareous grass.
