Preserve Pine Plains: Oppose Permits for Power Plants In Our Town!

The Issue

As responsible citizens, we recognize the necessity to diversify our energy sources and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Solar power may have a limited role to play as an alternative energy supplement, and in providing individuals energy autonomy.

However, despite being the current centerpiece of the renewable energy drive, solar technology is currently NOT a viable or scalable replacement for fossil fuels, and it is the WRONG choice for rural, agricultural, and forested settings.

We recognize significant negative impacts from utility-scale solar power plants to:

  • The environment & wildlife
  • Domestic animals & livestock
  • Human health & safety
  • Food security
  • Energy security & costs
  • Natural & mineral resources
  • Rural culture & heritage
  • Property values

We ask the Town of Pine Plains Planning Board to deny any and all permit requests to construct a so-called “solar farm”—like the one proposed by Carson-Power at 545 Bean River Road, Pine Plains—until known and potential negative impacts can be properly studied and evaluated, and our community can assess the costs and benefits of utility-scale solar power.
