Neighbors, this is a congratulations note to all of you, for your support. The Erie Town Council voted NO (5-1) to high density zoning for the Thompson Thrift 111th and Arapahoe high density residential zoning It’s in the news

A Moment to Celebrate:

This fantastic outcome is the result of our collective effort. Congratulations to everyone who used their voice, legal and professional skills, and signatures to express our community's needs and interests. Also a special thanks to those on the Council who opened their eyes and ears to see and listen, and those who engaged in critical thinking to make a decision that best serves our community. Thank you!

Key Highlights:

  • The Council voted 5-1 against the rezoning to high-density.
  • For now, the area will remain zoned as agriculture. We'll stay engaged with you to help come up with a better plan for this space.

A True Team Effort:

  • Over 130 of us attended the Town Council meetings, some lasting over 3 hours.
  • 97 people signed up to speak their concerns to the Council.
  • 235 pages of public comments were submitted.
  • 1,500 flyers were handed out.
  • Our community petition garnered 1,064 signatures (at the time of this update).
  • Special thanks to our legal team for their outstanding memorandum and presentation.

Why We Won:

  • The Council recognized the lack of infrastructure to support high-density zoning.
  • It was clear that 80% AMI is not affordable housing, especially compared to neighboring complexes like Savanna Nine Mile, which has lower rent and is not an affordable housing complex. (They also have 16 vacant units at the time of this update).

Special Thanks:

Less than three months ago we had no idea what to do, but we knew we needed to act. The resistance began when a concerned neighbor pulled over to read a small yellow sign on the side of the road, took a picture, and posted it on NextDoor. From there, we grew into an organized team. Power in numbers!

After 3.5 hours of Q&A and deliberation, it was a 5-1 no vote on HDR!

Thank you to everyone who signed the petition, attended council meetings, wrote letters to the Council, donated to the legal fund, posted on NextDoor, handed out flyers, and told friends and neighbors. And a big THANK YOU to the five members of the Council who listened to us!

We did it!

With deepest gratitude,
