Dear Neighbors, We want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your incredible support at last week's Town Council meeting. Your dedication to our community's well-being was truly inspiring. The vote was continued to Tuesday (6/18). We need you to show up again, in force, as the Council deliberates and makes their decision!
Outcome of the 6/11 Meeting:
- The decision on the high-density rezoning at 111th and Arapahoe was postponed. The Council will reconvene to vote on Tuesday, June 18th, at 7:30pm.
Meeting Highlights:
- We had a phenomenal turnout with 130 concerned neighbors in attendance. Our team distributed 130 "STOP 111th and Arapahoe High Density” stickers, and an impressive 97 people signed up to speak!
- Each speaker was allotted 3 minutes, and we were moved by the thoughtful and passionate presentations. You spoke from your hearts, shared your experiences, and presented facts on issues such as:The marginal affordable housing model versus Prop 123
- Major flaws in the traffic report
- The Council's bypassing of the comprehensive plan process
- Wildlife concerns
- Current drainage and flooding issues
Community Milestone:
Our petition, Preserve Our Neighborhood: Oppose High-Density Rezoning at 111th and Arapahoe Streets, has surpassed 1,000 signatures! This milestone reflects the strength of our collective voice. Thank you for helping us reach this important achievement.
Key Points from the Meeting:
- The turnout and number of speakers exceeded expectations, demonstrating our community’s strong opposition to the rezoning proposal.
- Each speaker made a powerful case, highlighting that the proposed 80% AMI for a couple renting a one-bedroom apartment is more expensive than a similar unit at Savanna Nine Mile, which is not an affordable housing complex.
- The meeting lasted 3 ½ hours before the Council decided to continue the vote to 6/18, showing that they are aware of our concerns and the weight of the decision before them. We are hopeful that they will listen and showcase that their constituents voices speak louder than big for-profit developers.
Next Steps:
- The next Town Council meeting will be on Tuesday, June 18th, at 7:30pm. We will send an update as soon as the details, including the start time and location, are posted.
- We need your continued support. If you can, please attend the meeting to show our unity and resolve. Every voice counts, and your presence makes a significant impact.
A Big Thank You:
- To everyone who attended and spoke, you have our deepest gratitude. Your commitment to our community is making a difference.
Let’s keep the momentum going and ensure that our voices are heard. Together, we can guide Erie towards responsible growth and true affordable housing that aligns with our community’s values and Prop 123.
See you Tuesday!
With appreciation, The Preserve Our Neighborhoods Coalition
