Preserve Lemont's racquetball and wallyball courts

Preserve Lemont's racquetball and wallyball courts
The Issue
In the heart of Lemont’s Centennial Building, the sound of a volleyball striking the wall isn’t just the start of a game — it’s the echo of generations.
More than 30 years ago, my grandma first stepped onto those wallyball courts. She didn’t join because she was chasing trophies or titles. She joined because she believed in something bigger: friendship, movement, and the quiet confidence that comes from realizing your body is capable of more than you think. At a time in life when many women begin to feel invisible, those courts offered her a space where she could feel seen and valued.
Today, we're at risk of losing this cherished community space. There is a proposal to convert the existing racquetball and wallyball courts into office space. This change would deprive the residents of Lemont of vital opportunities for fitness, social connection, and community recreation. Our town is one where wellness-focused amenities are not just valued but essential for the health and happiness of our residents.
The racquetball and wallyball courts in Lemont’s Centennial Building offer more than just a place to play. They are where strangers become friends over a shared love of sport. These courts foster a supportive environment where every resident, young or old, can improve their wellbeing through physical activity.
According to scientific studies, physical activity improves not only physical health but also mental wellbeing. Access to recreational spaces like these courts allows residents to maintain a healthier lifestyle, reducing stress and enhancing overall quality of life.
Furthermore, with over 70% of Americans not meeting the recommended level of physical activity, these courts offer a convenient and inexpensive way to keep active. They are particularly important in promoting social cohesion in a rapidly changing world where community resources are often limited or diminished.
We urge the local authorities and decision-makers to reconsider and preserve the racquetball and wallyball courts in Lemont’s Centennial Building. Let them remain as a pillar of our community, fostering fitness, friendships, and a sense of belonging for generations to come.
Please sign this petition to show your support for maintaining these important community resources and ensuring that future generations of Lemont residents can enjoy the same opportunities for health and happiness that we have cherished for decades. Together, we can protect our community's legacy and promote active lifestyles for all.
