The Issue

To: Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) Administration and Board Members

We, the undersigned parents, educators, and community members, urge LPSS to reverse its decision to eliminate language immersion Pre-K programs from our district. This decision, made without a formal vote or community input, jeopardizes the academic success of our students, the cultural richness of our community, and the future of French and Spanish immersion in our schools.

Why Language Immersion Pre-K Matters:

 1. Foundation for Success: Language immersion at the Pre-K level is critical to building fluency and proficiency in a second language. The earlier children are exposed to immersion, the better their academic and cognitive outcomes.

 2. Academic Excellence: LPSS language immersion schools consistently rank among the highest-performing schools in the district. These programs are proven to enhance academic achievement in core subjects such as reading and math, while also fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

 3. Global Competitiveness: Bilingualism prepares students to compete in a global economy, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

 4. Community Investment: Families who choose Pre-K immersion programs—especially those who do not meet income qualifications for free tuition—pay monthly tuition fees, further demonstrating their commitment to this valuable educational opportunity.

The elimination of Pre-K immersion programs disrupts a proven pathway to academic success and undermines parental choice. It is imperative that LPSS maintains and supports these programs for the benefit of all students, families, and the district as a whole.

Our Demands:

 1. Reinstate Language Immersion Pre-K: Restore French and Spanish immersion Pre-K programs immediately to ensure continuity and equity for current and future students.

 2. Protect Academic Excellence: Commit to maintaining and expanding immersion opportunities, recognizing their role in producing high-performing schools and students.

 3. Transparency and Community Involvement: Include parents, educators, and stakeholders in all decisions related to program changes to ensure transparency and accountability.

By signing this petition, we call on the Lafayette Parish School Board to act swiftly to preserve language immersion Pre-K and safeguard the future of these critical programs in our district.
