Protect Lahaina’s Native Hawaiian and Kama’āina Landowners

The Issue

Dear Native Hawaiians and kama'āina who have been displaced to the continent/mainland, concerned citizens, activists, and advocates,

We, the Native Hawaiian community and supporters of indigenous rights, come together to address a pressing issue that threatens our cultural heritage and the well-being of Lahaina landowners. The recent devastating fires in Lahaina have not only caused immense grief but also exposed the vulnerability of our people to permanent displacement and loss of land-ownership.

Lahaina holds great historical significance as one of Hawaii's most cherished cultural sites. It is a place where generations of Native Hawaiians have lived, worked, and celebrated their rich traditions. However, this land has long been coveted by wealthy developers who prioritize profit over preserving our land, heritage, and culture.

The high cost of housing in Hawaii has forced many Hawaiians to leave their homeland in search of more affordable options elsewhere. This ongoing exodus has resulted in countless families being uprooted from their communities, severed from their ancestral ties, and disconnected from the essence of what it means to be Hawaiian. We fear insidious behavior may force those who have already lost so much will also be forced off-island.

Heading into the presidential election year, we believe it is crucial to stand against these injustices by demanding stronger protections for Lahaina's landowners and preserving this sacred place for future generations. We call upon ALL congressional leaders, as well as local authorities in Hawaii to:

1. Center the needs of those currently impacted by the fires in Lahaina.  Implement stricter regulations on development projects that threaten culturally significant areas like Lahaina. Their individual, as well as collective, health, wealth (property ownership rights), and well-being is the first priority.

2. Prioritize the current landowners and enable their ability to rebuild on their current land.

3.  Implement and enforce laws that protect indigenous rights and prevent exploitation by wealthy developers.

4. Invest in sustainable infrastructure projects that benefit local communities without compromising cultural integrity or displacing residents.

5. Foster and COMMIT to partnerships between government agencies, community organizers and organizations, and Native Hawaiian leaders to develop comprehensive strategies for preserving and revitalizing Lahaina.

By signing this petition, you are joining us in urging your congressional leaders and policymakers to take immediate action to protect Lahaina's land and the rights of its native inhabitants. Together, we can ensure that our cultural heritage remains intact, that future generations have a place to call home, and that the voices of Native Hawaiians are heard and respected.

Let us unite in solidarity for justice, preservation, and the empowerment of indigenous communities. Stand with us today!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Pauahi Smith
