Preserve Funding for Virginia Beach City Public School's Arts Programs

The Issue

I am a student at Virginia Beach's Visual And Performing Arts Academy at Salem High School, deeply invested in our Instrumental Music strand. Music is not just a hobby for me, but a passion that has shaped my life in profound ways. However, our beloved theater, art, choir, orchestra, and band programs across Virginia Beach City Public Schools are under threat due to potential funding cuts.

These programs have been instrumental in fostering creativity, discipline and teamwork among students. They have provided us with opportunities to express ourselves through music and have enriched our academic experience beyond measure. According to the National Association for Music Education, students who participate in school music programs are more likely to excel academically and have better attendance rates.

Yet despite these benefits, our performing arts, visual arts, orchestras, choirs, and bands are facing an uncertain future due to proposed budget cuts. This is not just about preserving classes and extracurriculars; it's about safeguarding an integral part of our education that shapes well-rounded individuals.

We cannot stand by as these invaluable resources are threatened. We urge decision-makers such as the superintendent and the school board to reconsider any plans that would diminish funding for Virginia Beach City Public School's artistic programs.

I encourage you to read this article - How Children Benefit From Music Education In Schools - by the National Association Of Music Merchants, and this article - VB Parents Concerned Amid Music Program Cuts - by Wavy TV 10.

Please join us in this fight by signing this petition and emailing the school board at schoolboard@vbcpsboard.com today - your voice can make all the difference in ensuring we continue making magic and having fun together.
