Preserve Funding and Exempt National Weather Service Meteorologists From Layoffs

The Issue

The National Weather Service is a vital public resource that provides life-saving forecasts, severe weather alerts, and emergency warnings. Recent mass layoffs at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have put hundreds of meteorologists and other specialists out of work, threatening the ability of the NWS to protect communities from extreme weather events.

These cuts come at a time when hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and other climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent and severe. Without enough trained professionals, the accuracy and timeliness of weather warnings could be compromised, putting millions of lives at risk.

We call on Congress and the Administration to:

✅ Restore full funding for NOAA and the NWS to ensure uninterrupted weather forecasting and emergency alerts.

✅ Exempt NWS meteorologists and essential staff from layoffs so they can continue their life-saving work.

✅ Prioritize public safety over budget cuts by maintaining the NWS workforce and its critical operations.

Weather doesn’t stop, and neither should the NWS. Protect our meteorologists. Protect our forecasts. Protect our future.
