Preserve Free Access to Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor
The Issue
As a local resident of Rostrevor, I have cherished the free access to Kilbroney Park for years. It's not just a park; it is our community, our place for recreation and relaxation. It is where we connect with nature and each other. The proposal by Newry Mourne and Down District Council to charge access is deeply concerning given we objected to it strongly when they surveyed our opinions.
Kilbroney Park has been freely accessible to all since the Council purchased it for the people of our village and surrounding areas. This park serves as an essential open space for thousands of residents from Rostrevor and surrounding areas like Newry. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), parks such as Kilbroney significantly contribute to public health by providing spaces for physical activity, which can help reduce obesity rates and improve mental health.
Charging access limits this vital resource only to those who can afford it, creating an unnecessary barrier in our community that prides itself on inclusivity. We believe that everyone should have equal rights to enjoy their local environment without financial constraints.
We urge Newry Mourne and Down District Council not only to consider the historical significance of free access but also its impact on public health and community cohesion.
Please sign this petition if you agree that Kilbroney Park should remain freely accessible for all members of our community now, and generations to come.
