Preserve Clonsilla Lodge's Chimney Stack and Wall Plate

The Issue

As a resident of Clonsilla, and member of Clonsilla and Porterstown Heritage Society, I have always admired the unique character of our local landmarks. The Clonsilla Lodge, with its distinctive chimney stack and wall plate dating its construction to 1897, has been there for the entire lifetime of every single resident of Clonsilla. As Deanbay Limited, of 68 Pembroke Road, Ballsbridge plans to demolish the Lodge to make way for a new apartment complex, it is crucial that we retain these elements as part of the new design. Fingal County Council have authorised the demolishing of this building which was not sympathetic to the conservation of the vernacular of Clonsilla. Action on the preservation of the chimney will help preserve some of the local history for future residents and maintain a connection to our past. Please sign this petition to ensure that Deanbay Limited incorporates these historical features into their new development plan. This is an important conservation issue which is supported by Clonsilla and Porterstown Heritage Society (https://clonsillaheritage.ie).

The 2016 census counts almost 60,000 people living in Clonsilla, that's 60,000 people that don't know Clonsilla without these chimneys, and it really is hard to imagine what it would be like.

WEHS are the initial of Captain William Edward Hollwey Steeds, and the lodge was built during his tenure as owner of Clonsilla House (demolished and replaced with Portersgate) this is one of the last remaining link to the Hollwey Steeds family, famous horse breeders and linked to the ‘Clonsilla Poisoning’ of 1887. It was built in 1897.

This little piece of history is worth remembering and worth sharing. So after you sign, please share this locally with your WhatsApp groups and let's make our collective voice heard.
