The Issue

Growing up in Redditch, I've always appreciated the charm and historical beauty of our town. One of the key landmarks that have stood the test of time and has always held a special place in my heart is the frontage of the Smallwood Hospital building in Church Green. Its unique architecture and historical significance not only contribute to the character of our beloved Redditch but also serve as a living testament to our rich heritage.

However, recent developments threaten the preservation of this iconic facade, and by extension, our town's story. As part of the community, it is our duty to ensure that our heritage is not just remembered, but actively preserved. The historical frontage of the Smallwood Hospital is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a part of our communal identity and history. Losing it would mean erasing a part of ourselves.

The Smallwood Hospital building, a relic from the mid-19th century, showcases architectural styles unique to that era, and preserving it would ensure future generations have a window into our past. According to the Redditch Historical Society, buildings like Smallwood play a crucial role in maintaining the architectural diversity of the area and fostering a sense of continuity and identity.

Restoration could involve engaging with conservation specialists to ensure that any work on the building respects its original design and materials, thereby maintaining its historical integrity. Beyond preserving history, these restorations can enhance cultural tourism, benefitting local businesses and fostering economic growth in Redditch.

It was our hope that the NHS recognized the importance of preserving our heritage over succumbing to rapid modern development, by restoring and maintaining the Smallwood Hospital frontage, but sadly it has been sold on and we now need to try and get this message over to the new owner[s]  because we stand to preserve a vital piece of Redditch’s history and identity.

I urge you to join me in appealing to the new owner[s]  to take immediate action to preserve and restore the historical frontage of the Smallwood Hospital building. Let us safeguard our heritage for ourselves and for future generations. Please sign this petition and help make a difference in protecting our town's historical treasures.
