For more than a century, WBT has been part of the story of Charlotte, the Carolinas, and American broadcasting. Since signing on in 1922, the station has informed, entertained, comforted, and connected generations of listeners through breaking news, severe weather coverage, elections, sports, entertainment, and moments of historic significance. Today, WBT proudly continues serving the Charlotte region from the Ty Boyd Studio on 107.9 FM. This petition is not about returning WBT to AM, questioning its move to FM, or opposing future redevelopment. It is about preserving the historic place where nearly a century of broadcasting history was made.

The WBT transmitter site on Nations Ford Road is one of the most recognizable and historically significant broadcasting facilities in the Carolinas. Its three iconic Blaw-Knox towers, historic transmitter building, Cold War-era fallout shelter, and supporting structures represent generations of engineering, innovation, emergency preparedness, and public service. Together, they tell the story of the people whose voices reached millions of listeners across the Carolinas and much of the eastern United States.

Historic places have value because they provide a tangible connection to the people and events that shaped our communities. Once demolished, they cannot be recreated.

This petition respectfully asks Radio One, Beasley Media Group, any future property owner, the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, preservation organizations, elected officials, community leaders, and other interested partners to work together to preserve the historic WBT 1110 AM transmitter site, including the transmitter building, the three Blaw-Knox towers, the Cold War-era fallout shelter, and other historically significant features.

Preserving this site does not mean preventing progress or redevelopment. Across North Carolina and the nation, historic properties have successfully been incorporated into new development through thoughtful planning, adaptive reuse, and creative partnerships. Preservation and progress can work together to strengthen a community while honoring its history.

In addition to preserving the site itself, this petition encourages the preservation of historically significant equipment, photographs, recordings, engineering documents, artifacts, and memorabilia so WBT's remarkable story can continue to educate and inspire future generations. Museums, educational exhibits, historical markers, and community partnerships can all play an important role in sharing that history.

There are no villains in this story. Radio One, Beasley Media Group, the property's current owner, any future owner, government leaders, preservation organizations, and the community all have an opportunity to work together toward a solution that respects both private property rights and Charlotte's broadcasting heritage.

The purpose of this petition is simple: to encourage collaboration before permanent changes are made and to demonstrate that thousands of people believe the historic WBT transmitter site deserves thoughtful consideration.
