Not one SD40M-2 (rebuilt from an SD40, SD45 or SDP45) has been used by a scenic railroad nor a museum, this petition will get someone to persuade one of the owners of a former SP SD40M-2 that isn't using one in revenue service anymore to donate said SD40M-2 to a museum or scenic railroad and have it restored to operating condition and in its SP colours. So, we can have at least one (maybe two or more) SD40M-2s in preservation as some are stored, rusting away, some still in revenue service (could get retired and would possibly get stored or scrapped in the future), while some are getting scrapped.

Dieselmotive Company Inc. (BUGX) has three SD40M-2 locomotives on their roster (#2746, #2768 and #2779), but all three of those units haven't been given to a scenic railroad nor a museum.

And that is what this petition is all about. Once we have as many signatures for this petition, and when a former SP SD40M-2 gets donated to a scenic railroad nor a museum for preservation, we will declare victory.
