2023 NBC Coverage of the “Reopening” of Allen Morris Park

In May of 2023, NBC reported on the “reopening” of Allen Morris Park after the extended legal battle with the city.

The coverage positioned this situation as though the Allen Morris Company  was fighting to return it to the public to be opened as a public park. No mention of any future plans for development - whether another “restaurant” or supertall luxury condo. No mention that the public park would not stay a public park for the community. The same lawyer we’ve been dealing with in all this, Javier Fernandez, was involved even back then and mentions in this coverage the Allen Morris family being “relieved” for this outcome. 

What followed included a large banner with the smiling face of Commissioner Sabina Covo announcing proudly the “re-opening” of the park, also conveniently used as a key talking point for her re-election campaign. 

No wonder we are “confused” or have “misinformation” regarding this situation around this tiny park. There has been clear manipulation and a lack of transparency along this entire circumstance across a variety of parties and residents have been deliberately left in the dark with no information and no input on the fate of one of our tiniest and only parks in the concrete jungle of Brickell.   

Brickell residents and all of Miami deserve better than this. It's clear the Allen Morris Company’s priority is profit and there is no community interest here. If there was, the developer would leave the public park a public park.

We deserve to keep this tiny public park a tiny public park. Brickell needs neither anymore luxury restaurants nor anymore luxury supertalls. Brickell needs trees and public parks. Brickell is starved for parks, community green spaces and tree canopy.
