Preservation of Mount Barker's Memorial Walkway Wetland - Save our Pond!
The issue
This petition is seeking signatures of concerned residents of Mount Barker who are interested in preserving a pond of ecological significance. The purpose of this petition is to demonstrate to council that a number of residents are concerned and opposed to plans to drain and dredge this pond. The section of creek in focus runs from Ray Orr Drive to Memorial Drive with the waterway feeding into Western Flat Creek and, by extension, Laratinga Wetland. The biological corridor hosts frogs, turtles, the native water rat (rakali), and many native bird species, with the pond acting as a central haven for wildlife.
Kerrie McCarthy is representing a group of concerned residents and has met with council several times to put forth an argument for preservation. The group is calling for reconsideration of the council’s plan with low impact models and ecologically sensitive solutions suggested. Council plans to destroy and modify the pond to facilitate appropriate stormwater management with the upcoming housing development along Thiele Avenue.
The preservation of these healthy tributaries is important as Mount Barker continues to develop both for the natural environment and for its residents.
Please sign our petition if you care about preserving our natural and healthy ecosystems.
