The Issue

In Potosi, MO, many families, including mine, are deeply concerned about the impending removal of high tier sex offenders from the registry. These individuals are scheduled to have their cases reviewed and potentially be removed from the registry before the new laws, which would abolish their chance for removal, are enforced. This alarming situation threatens our community's safety, as these offenders may have the opportunity to live anonymously among us without adequate monitoring.

New legislation, set to go into effect on August 28, 2025, promises to rectify the concerns many have with the current legal structure by preventing certain offenders from being removed from the registry. However, before this date, numerous cases are lined up for court reviews, potentially allowing dangerous offenders to slip through the cracks.

By postponing all sexual offender registry removal court dates until the new legislation takes effect, we can ensure that individuals who pose a significant risk to community safety remain on the registry, thereby protecting our families and our peace of mind. A gap remains in our legal safeguarding, and by granting these postponements, we allow time for the effectiveness and protections of the new laws to come into play.

Statistics underline the seriousness of the situation. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, there are more than 900,000 registered sex offenders in the United States, and closer monitoring can prevent recidivism. Additionally, a study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that sex offenders had a lower rate of re-arrest than other criminals for new crimes but were four times more likely to be arrested for a sex crime.

We cannot allow procedural technicalities to undo the public safety improvements that our community and state legislation aim to enforce. Our call to postpone these court dates is driven by a genuine concern for our neighborhoods' safety and an urgent need to align legal procedures with the principles of justice and protection.

Join us in urging the responsible judicial bodies to take immediate action by signing this petition and making our voices heard. Together, we can ensure that the safety of our community is not compromised during this transitional period. Please sign and share this petition to protect our community and prevent premature deregistration of sex offenders.
