The Issue

As a veteran of the United States Air Force and a recipient of both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill, I experienced firsthand the financial struggles associated with the 36-month cap on education benefits. Despite my determination to further my education, once my benefits were exhausted, I was forced to rely on student loans to complete my Physician Assistant program. Today, I proudly serve as a Hepatology Physician Assistant at the Veterans Health Administration Illiana Healthcare System, continuing my mission to care for fellow veterans.

DISCLOSURE** (My employment is unrelated to this request as I work for the Veterans Health Administration and not the benefits section, regardless the VA as a whole has no affiliation with this petition)

Many veterans like myself faced significant financial burdens due to this cap, especially those pursuing advanced degrees such as master’s, medical, or law degrees. With the recent Rudisill v. Secretary of Veterans Affairs decision, there is a renewed hope for Veterans to seek redress and receive the benefits they rightfully deserve. Yet, the process of identifying eligible veterans who fall under this case, have received notification of entitlement from the VA, pursued advanced degrees, and are burdened by student loans remains cumbersome and unclear.

It's crucial that the Department of Veterans Affairs takes immediate action to streamline and communicate effectively with veterans potentially impacted by the Rudisill decision. Establishing a straightforward application process and extending benefits to cover the costs accrued post-36 months would significantly alleviate the financial burdens veterans endure. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, only a small percentage of veterans pursue advanced degrees, yet their contributions to society are invaluable.

Together, we must push for a systematic approach that ensures every veteran eligible under the Rudisill case receives their entitled benefits without the added stress and complexity. I implore the Veteran Affairs Benefits administration to rectify this oversight and stand by the veterans who have given so much to this nation.

Sign this petition to urge the Department of Veterans Affairs to acknowledge the financial constraints veterans face in pursuing advanced education and to expand the benefits under the Rudisill v. Secretary of Veterans Affairs ruling. Let's ensure no veteran is left behind due to a potential legislative oversight.
