Portland Freedom Fund: No More Bail for Abusers

The Issue

Portland Freedom Fund,

We, the signers of this petition comprised of the Muslim Community and other supports, demand the following:

  1. You issue an immediate apology acknowledging your role in the bail release of Mohamed Adan and that you failed to perform due diligence by ensuring the person you provided bail support to would not cause harm to others and as a result of not doing due diligence, you contributed to the events that led to the murder of Rachel “Jamila”  Adan Abraham, which also deprived her six children of a mother.
  2. You immediately implement a policy that any future bail support will require a full and thorough assessment of the criminal history of those you are supporting to ensure you are not releasing people who pose a danger to others. A simple review of Mohamed Adan’s criminal history would show he had a history of abusing women and had threatened to kill his wife prior to you supporting his release.

This murder was avoidable and would not likely have occurred without your bail support. Mohamed Adan was charged with crimes of violence against his wife and was not going to be released without your support and your statement you issued doesn’t take accountability for your failure to ensure those you are supporting don’t pose a threat to the community, especially to women. On your website you state: “We are a volunteer-run abolitionist organization currently dedicated to reducing harms perpetuated against our Black, Brown, and Indigenous neighbors by the criminal justice system through posting bail so they may navigate their case from a position of freedom.”

The reality is that in this case you supported bail release for an individual who had already harmed the very people you seek to reduce harm to and who went on through the freedom you enabled to kill someone you purport to be reducing harm toward. Rachel “Jamila”  Adan Abraham was an Afro Latina, a mother, a loved community member, a Muslim, and she deserved to be safe from harm and you failed her in that regard.

This petition is organized by Muslimahs United a local nonprofit in Oregon that assists victims of domestic violence in the Muslim Community.
