Two days ago, we sent you information on vital updates from the past month – today we are giving you the most recent update that has just been released - one of the principal officers on the scene has a history of violent attacks, even against his own family and he has publicly stated that he hates black people. The BBC have decided to name this officer. (see attached link) In the light of this important information being revealed, we know that we must continue the urgent and important work we have started in gaining justice for Sheku Bayoh. So far, your continued support for us has led to notable success and now we are appealing to you for a small donation to assist us in carrying on the campaign to achieve further success. A £2/$5 donation from you towards campaign activities will go a long way! It will help us in our fight to carry on the activities to reach our result. Because we need more than an ‘inquiry’ into this injustice. It was clear from the moment we heard of our relative’s death that we were not being given all of the correct facts of the situation. We started the Justice4 Sheku campaign to get to the truth. Here are just some of the facts which answer questions we are continually asked and that the our campaign has helped to uncover. Fact 1 : The family were given 5 different version of what took place. One of these ‘versions’ was that Sheku Bayoh was found lying on the street, that a passer by saw him and called an ambulance. We now know this to be untrue Fact 2: The statement that a petite female office, Nicola Short was first on the scene and alone is incorrect. However, she was the first to hit Sheku Bayoh with a baton. She suffered no physical injuries. The first officers on the scene were two large male officers – both over 6ft 3 in height and over 20 stone in weight (Sheku was 5’10 and 12 stone). There was a total over 100 stone on top of him at the time of his arrest Fact 3: Sheku Bayoh was not carrying a knife at the time of his arrest and no knife has ever been found. Fact 4: An autopsy was done without the family being given the opportunity to identify the body and without a family pathologist present, even though the authorities were explicitly informed that they wanted to have a family pathologist present. We must continue to fight for Justice for Sheku Bayoh and your support so far has really helped us to make steps in our campaign, including being able to get the information and to have it released that you have just read in the link above. As our march on 6 September in Kircaldy revealed, other families in Scotland who have suffered at the hands of the police, stood with us and said that continued support and eventual success for our campaign is a success for us all. Police Scotland must be made accountable and answerable for deaths in police custody. Many, many thanks and appreciation to those of you who have already supported us with funds towards the campaign. Every penny and every signature counts!
