Thank you for your ongoing support for the Justice4Sheku Bayoh campaign. http://tinyurl.com/n9kltdm (This link contains a disturbing graphic revealing the injuries suffered by Sheku Bayoh on 3 May when he died in police custody We’d like to share other important and vital updates with you during the past month. TIMELINE 3 September - we met with the Lord Advocate (the Chief Public Prosecutor) Following this meeting, he pledged support for the Bayoh family, stating that we would be involved in any decisions regarding experts called forth on the case. He also made the following statement: "Whenever the PIRC (Police Investigations and Review Commission) under the direction of Crown Office are investigating a case where there is an indication that a person serving with the police may have committed an offence or there has been a death in custody which the Procurator Fiscal is required to investigate, then the PIRC officers have all the powers and privileges of a constable, such as detention and arrest, seizing documents and evidence." 6 September - our campaign activities led to a successful march in Kircaldy raising awareness of the Sheku Bayoh campaign and the suffering of his family and other families whose family members have also become victims of police brutality. 7 September - At last! Our continued voice and noise finally led to a meeting with the outgoing Chief Police Constable, Sir Stephen House. We explained our frustrations with the procedure and our disappointment, hurt and anger at the way we have been treated by Police Scotland since the fateful day when Sheku Bayoh lost his life on 3 May. He gave us a personal apology. 6 October - Unions in Edinburgh and Glasgow support the Bayoh Family http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/13805111.Edinburgh_unions_and_students_back_Sheku_Bayoh_family/ http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/13805129.Unions_and_students_set_to_back_Sheku_Bayoh_family_in_rally/ 8 October - Our case is presented at the Scottish Parliament and family members watch CCTV footage of Shek’s last minute’s alive http://m.stv.tv/news/edinburgh/1330320-family-shown-footage-of-sheku-bayoh-death-in-police-custody/ We asked for the footage to be released to the public but were told that this isn’t possible because it is an ongoing investigation. These are our next major steps in the campaign 22 October - Edinburgh University host a public meeting on police victimisation and death in police custody https://ucuedinburgh.wordpress.com/events/ 29th October - meeting at the Parliament in Westminster meeting with MPs hosted by Roger Mullin MP with members from families who have died in police custody in Scotland and England 31st October - ‘Injustice’ march starting from Trafalgar Square, London 27 November - the last day in post for Sir Stephen House. ( He gave a 3 month resignation notice on 27 August). WE WOULD LIKE A PUBLIC APOLOGY FROM SIR STEPHEN HOUSE BEFORE HE LEAVES OFFICE. - In July, Police Scotland issued a public apology to the families of Lamara Bell and John Yuill - In September, Police Scotland issued a public apology to the family of Janet McKay Why doesn’t the family of Sheku’s Bayoh deserve the same consideration? On Wednesday (14 October) we will be sending you an important update on the case. Please open this email as soon as you can. And please continue to ask your friends and family to sign the petition.
