Soon after Stephen Harper began his first term as prime minister in 2006 he set out to cut $1 billion in funding across the board and one of the hardest hit departments was Status of Women...Behind the scenes, Harper also wanted to cut funding to the Native Women’s Association of Canada that paid for its Sisters in Spirit program that was, for the first time in history, officially tallying the number of missing and murdered Indigenous women.(APTN)
