The Issue

As all of us are beginning to enter adulthood, we all have different life changes happening and so much going on. Whether it's working a full time job after school, being responsible for younger sibling, being active in a sport, or a club, all the while juggling our last run at CHS. With that being said, Chelsea High School has recently adopted a new cellphone policy, where at the beginning of the school day, we will have to keep any and all electronics in our Yondr Pouch. We understand where schools are coming from, trying to increase productivity, student engagement, and promote a better learning environment. However, as seniors, we feel as though we've paid our dues to the school, we know better than of our underclassmen what is expected of us, in regards of following rules and behaving because we know we have great things at risk. This is the time where we should be celebrating being at the end of our high school journey and capturing all of the great memories that come with being a senior, such as Senior Sunrise, Pep Rally, Spirit Week, all of our fundraising we do to earn money for our graduating class, overall all the hardwork we put in and the pride that comes with being a senior. Yet we will not be able to capture any of those last moments where we as, CHS Class of 2026, are together. In addition to letting those precious memories go undocumented, we also are all in the process of applying for colleges, trade schools, enrolling in the military, or going into the workforce. Chelsea High School has a strict system where senders outside of Chelsea Public Schools can not send emails to us or receive them from us, and we can only be logged in with a Chelsea Schools account. Under the new policy, we would not be able to use our personal devices, and will only be able to use school issued chromebooks. It's extremely crucial to have access to our personal emails because  they will be sent any updates pertaining to applications, deadlines, and important notifications, which will all be sent to our personal emails, instead of school ones. This raises concerns amongst us seniors because we would hate to miss a wonderful opportunity because we were not able to access our personal emails.  We now live in a digital era where everything is quick, convenient, and can be all accessed through the click of our cellphones. Now more than ever, time is of the essence and certain circumstances call for quick decisions, which all makes a difference in our future life path. So many us are meeting with our guidance counselors, our trio counselors, keeping in contact with our parents and employers. Being in communication is key and urgent during these times. We understand the purpose of the policy and agree that phones should not disrupt learning. As a solution, we propose that seniors be granted limited phone privileges during non instructional times such as before school, during lunch, passing periods, and after school. Seniors could also sign a privilege agreement that would allow administration to revoke this access if abused. This compromise would allow us to celebrate our final year, stay connected for important responsibilities, and still maintain a focused learning environment. Please take time to reflect and reconsider how this new policy will impact Chelsea High School's graduating class.  -Ariana Baires & Bridgett Ulloa Two CHS seniors
